Spring Cleaning: How Often Should You Replace Your Toothbrush?

How often should you replace your toothbrush? According to the CDC, the short answer is every 3 to 4 months, or sooner if the bristles look worn or frayed.

Although you might think a worn toothbrush still works just fine, studies suggest worn bristles are much less effective at removing plaque and bacteria. Since plaque is difficult to see, you may not be aware that your brush isn’t removing it as well as it used to. Then, the plaque will harden and become tartar, leading to problems like gum disease.

A newer brush will do a better job brushing aside plaque and food particles. Then, brushing will help you avoid tooth decay and infection. Since toothbrushes are relatively inexpensive, why not choose a new one more frequently? As part of your spring cleaning efforts, throw out that old toothbrush and reward yourself with a new one.

When to Replace Your Toothbrush

The American Dental Association recommends brushing at least twice a day for two minutes. Given that much use, an average brush can last three or four months before needing replacement.

See more below:

Electric Toothbrushes

For those with electric toothbrushes, you may need to replace the smaller brush head more frequently. With these short, rotating brushes, wear can be faster. So, check what the manufacturer recommends. Generally, you may need to replace the brush head every 12 weeks.

Notably, some manufacturers also suggest replacing a manual toothbrush every 12 weeks. Certainly, replacing your brush more frequently is a good idea if you notice any signs of wear.

Kid’s Toothbrushes

For younger kids, you may need to replace toothbrushes more often. Sometimes, they will chew on the brush handle or play with the brush, leading to faster wear. Thus, parents must keep an eye on younger kids to make sure they use the brush properly.

When Someone in the Home is Sick

If anyone in a household becomes sick, it’s a good idea to replace toothbrushes afterward. It’s an easy way to reduce the chances of spreading bacterial infections.

Always, keep everyone’s toothbrushes apart, so there’s no risk of cross-contamination. Thus, it’s not a good idea to keep them all together in a drawer. And, never share a toothbrush.

Caring for Your Toothbrush

The best way to care for a toothbrush is simply to rinse it fully clean with tap water after use. Then, let it air dry in the upright position.

Counterintuitively, it’s not a great idea to try to sanitize toothbrushes with hot water, disinfectant, or mouthwash. According to the CDC, doing so can actually spread germs in some conditions. Similarly, dishwashers, microwaves, or ultraviolet devices can damage the bristles. So, you’ll need to replace them more frequently.

We hope this information on ‘how often should you replace your toothbrush?’ is helpful. As you can see, replacing your brush routinely every 3 to 4 months is an easy and inexpensive way to improve oral health. Therefore, set a reminder or mark your calendar, and use a new brush. Pick your favorite color, and consider it a small reward and wise investment in a healthier smile.
